You know, I think, while Asuka may find Mari annoying and Mari finds that amusing as hell (she does for most things), I don’t think either of them can imagine not having each other’s backs. It’s been fourteen years. They work for the same organization and presumably were the only ones who knew exactly what each other was going through. Someday, I hope there is a long doujin, fanfiction, or an official series which covers those years in their lives (in everyone’s lives, really, especially Misato). There are hints that Mari has some sort of purpose and/or actual depth as a character, but we’ve sadly yet to see it. So I think it would be interesting to see these two engaging on a more serious level.
